The Importance of a Sustainable Mindset

The importance of a sustainability mindset

After water, tea is the most popular drink in the world. According to the International Tea Committee, around 100 million cups are drunk every day in the UK alone, which amounts to almost 36 billion cups per year. Yet the vast majority of tea drinkers around the world use electric kettles, which means that an astronomical number of kettles are used to make tea every day around the world!

According to Chris Goodall, author of 'How to Live a Low Carbon Life', an electric kettle uses over 4% (!) of a household's annual electricity consumption. This is because on average it boils twice as much water as is actually needed, resulting in a huge waste of energy, water, money and time. Especially if the water is boiled again half an hour later to make a second cup of tea. In the UK alone, this results in around 3,500 tonnes of unnecessary CO2 being emitted every day.

The packaging waste generated by conventional tea machines, mainly from the environmentally harmful capsules, is also an environmental problem. According to EuroStat, the estimated packaging waste in the EU in 2018 was on average 174 kg per inhabitant (ranging from 67.8 kg per inhabitant in Croatia to 227.5 kg per inhabitant in Germany).

Our solutions

The world needs more sustainable solutions. The world's resources must be conserved and waste reduced.

At BRU, we bring a sustainable mindset to everything we do - including our tea brewing machine, our tea varieties, how we choose our suppliers, to the packaging of our products.

Our innovative BRU Maker One tea machine works WITHOUT capsules, with both loose tea and tea bags! It only heats the exact amount of water you need for your cup of tea, to the temperature you choose - a smart solution to save water, energy, time & money, with minimal waste and maximum convenience.

When manufacturing our tea brewing machines and sourcing our tea, we look for environmentally friendly organizations that care about sustainability as much as we do.

We handle our packaging responsibly and, wherever possible, use materials that reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint. We try to source materials that can be recycled (for example cardboard), minimize the use of plastic and do not use polystyrene.

We are a Swiss-based company that cares about the global environment and believe that concrete actions towards sustainability are something we all need to work on.

We hope you will join us on our journey!
