How do I descale the machine?

Depending on the hardness of your water, limescale will build up over time. If you do not descale the inside of your machine, this can affect the water flow and therefore the taste of the tea. If you use the BRU Maker One daily and have moderately hard water, we recommend descaling it every two to three months. For intensive use and hard water, more frequent descaling is recommended. If you notice limescale deposits in the water tank or around the white nozzles, it’s time to descale the device.

For environmentally friendly descaling, we recommend 60% acetic acid or 50% citric acid for optimum results.

You can also use a high-quality commercial descaler that is suitable for coffee machines. You can easily find them by searching "buy descaler for coffee machine" in your web browser. Descalers are usually available in liquid, powder, or tablet form.

There are two main ways in which you can descale your BRU Maker One:

1. Automatic Descaling with the BRU Descaling Adapter

Coming soon: You can buy the BRU Descaling Adapter in our shop

2. Manual descaling

Here is the video tutorial for manual descaling  (which differs slightly from the description below, but experience has shown that it works better)

How to use your descaler

Step 1: Empty the water tank. If you have installed a water filter in the tank, please remove it first.

Step 2: Please read all safety instructions on your descaler first. Fill a container (e.g. a jug or bowl) with  approx. 1.2 l / 40 oz of descaling solution. Follow the instructions on the packaging of your descaler.

Step 3: Pour the descaling liquid into the water tank and make sure that it is correctly attached to the machine.

Step 4: Bring up the Water Dispenser Menu. Set the water temperature to "COLD" and the quantity to "infinite". Place a container with a capacity up to 1.2l under the spout. Press "START". Wait until all the descaling liquid has run through.

Step 5: Open the machine cover. Check whether the white nozzles on the underside of the lid still have limescale deposits. If this is the case, soak some kitchen towel in descaling solution and wrap it around the nozzles. Leave this to work for about 15 minutes

(NOTE: We recommend that you use household gloves for this step as descaling solution can irritate the skin. Please follow the instructions on the packaging of your descaler).

Remove the paper towel from the nozzles and wipe the nozzles with a clean, damp towel.

Step 6: If you think there is still too much limescale in the machine, pour the descaling solution that has already run through the machine back into the water tank. Repeat steps 3-6

Step 7: Dispose of the descaling solution after 1 to 2 descaling cycles. Remove the water tank from the machine and clean it with water and washing-up liquid. Rinse it with clean water. Fill the water tank to the brim with fresh water and put it back into your appliance.

Step 8: The machine should still be in the Water Dispenser Menu (if not, bring it up again) and set to "COLD" and "infinite" water. Press "START" and wait until all of the water has run through the dispenser. Pour away the water!

Step 9: Remove the tea strainer and the glass brewing chamber and wash them in the dishwasher or by hand. Then, insert them back into the BRU Maker One .

Step 10: Your appliance is now descaled and you can use it as usual.
